Russia, alongside China, vetoed a US-led resolution that called for the “imperative of an immediate and sustained ceasefire” in Gaza. The resolution called for an immediate ceasefire lasting for six weeks conditional on the release of all remaining Israeli hostages, and the delivery of humanitarian aid.

Moscow made several claims before rejecting the resolution, saying that the resolution did not contain a call for a ceasefire and that the US was misleading the international community. Russian UN ambassador Vassily
Nebenzia added that the sole purpose for the resolution is to “play to the voters, to throw them a bone” in alluding to the upcoming US presidential elections.

Nebenzia also said the resolution doesn’t do enough to pressure Israel and that “the US draft contains and effective green light for Israel to mount a military operation in Rafah” and “that nothing would prevent Western Jerusalem from continuing their brutal cleansing of the south of the Gaza Strip.”

The proposed US-led resolution was different from previous draft resolutions, which demanded an unconditional ceasefire and which were vetoed by the US.
