Evacuees from Jasper National Park have started to arrive at a reception centre in Calgary, Alta., on Tuesday night, finding safety after thousands were forced to flee from a fast-moving wildfire closing in on the town.
Highway closures in the Rocky Mountains have made for a long, tiring journey and the evacuees were glad to arrive in the city where temporary accommodations and assistance were available.
“When we left Jasper, the first night at 2 a.m. in the morning, we camped on the side of the road in Blue River. And then we got up at 5:30 and then we drove from Blue River through Kamloops, and all the way here,” evacuee Rachel Strozen said.
Global’s Elissa Carpenter reports.
