Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Copy a Cell and Paste Multiple Times - the Clipboard Value can Change.
Welcome to another episode of the MrExcel podcast. In today's episode, we're going to dive into a little Excel mystery that I like to call the "Paste Surprise". I stumbled upon this while working on a spreadsheet and I couldn't believe what I discovered. So, I wanted to share it with all of you.
First, let's take a look at the clipboard. I have some numbers and a formula that gives us a result of 3. I copy that 3 to the clipboard and then paste it as a value, adding it to the existing numbers. As expected, we get a result of 9. But here's where things get interesting. The numbers and the formula are being averaged in another cell, and now the cell with the formula has a value of 2 instead of 3. But wait, the clipboard still shows a 3. What's going on here?
I was under the impression that once I copied something to the clipboard, it would stay there until I pressed escape. But that's not the case. When I paste the value and add it, Excel goes back and re-evaluates the formula, resulting in a different value. This was a shock to me, as I had never encountered this before. In fact, I had a similar situation where I was adding 3 years to a date and copying it down a column, only to find out that the values were incorrect. It turns out, the same "Paste Surprise" was at play.
So, I want to hear from all of you. Did you know about this "Paste Surprise" or were you just as surprised as I was? Leave a comment on Lipson or YouTube and let me know your thoughts. And don't forget to hit that like button and subscribe for more Excel tips and tricks. Thanks for tuning in and I'll see you next time for another episode of the MrExcel podcast.
