Equity on the balance sheet, at the start of the year, 41.4 billion dollars. At the end of the year: 41.1 billion dollars. Nothing much has happened then, right?

Wrong! Have a look at how we got from that starting number to the ending number.

Equity increases when the company is profitable, when it generates net income.

Equity decreases when the company pays dividends, or buys back its own shares.

All three of these line items are very large for Linde in 2023.
