Looking down from above is a great way to make portraits that have an unusual and exciting feel but as photographer Gavin Hoey explains, there’s more to getting the perfect overhead portrait than just looking down.

Gavin starts by demonstrating a simple trick to make your model feel comfortable while on the floor and at the same time getting a more natural look. Moving on to lighting, Gavin explains that although you need to think a little differently, lighting a top-down shoot doesn’t have to be difficult.

With everything in place, Gavin goes on to add over 100 black balloons to the scene for a dramatic top-down, low key shoot.
