In this first episode of “In the Field with Donal Boyd” we follow Donal (a resident of Iceland) behind the scenes as he creates portraits of the symbol of culture and heritage in Iceland: the Icelandic Horse.

For Donal, the Icelandic horse represents the connection between the landscape and the people. It’s the bridge between the intensity of nature in Iceland and humanity. In this short film, Donal aims to explore the connection between the two through photography with the goal to embody the spirit of the Icelandic Horse in a portrait.

How do you photograph the spirit of a horse?

In this video, you’ll learn alongside him as he explores the cultural context of the Horse throughout the history of Iceland and develops his photographic methodology. Donal covers what gear he uses, how he approaches capturing emotional portraits of horses, and what it takes to capture the essence of the equine spirit.

Location: Kjarr Horses, Ölfus, South Iceland.

Donal Boyd is a wildlife conservationist and fine art portrait photographer and filmmaker with the mission to promote "Conservation of Nature Through Visual Advocacy”.

Frank Nieuwenhuis is a director and filmmaker based in Iceland with the mission to capture and depict the essence of his subjects and their personal stories through cinematic and highly aesthetic visuals.
