They called the twins Bruce and Brian. When the brothers were 8 months old, due to urination problems associated with phimosis, they were prescribed circumcision. They recommended that Bruce create an artificial phallus before he goes to school. But one way or another, multiple and painful surgeries were required, and the cosmetic and functional results were not promising.
Shocked by the incident, parents began to seek help. A year later, they saw a television program on intersex problems and trans-problems, in which psychologist Professor John Mani spoke, he was engaged in the development of new views in the field of puberty.
After the threat of a new surgery hung over the family, a real hell began in the house - 13-year-old Bruce rebelled. He stopped visiting Dr. Mani, and even threatened his parents that if they tried to do this against his will, he would commit suicide.
In 1980, the parents decided and told the 15-year-old son the whole truth. Bruce made three unsuccessful attempts at suicide, the last of which for some time put him into a coma. Bruce after much deliberation decided to consider a man. He chose another name for himself - David. For a brother, the revealed truth was the beginning of a mental disorder that would develop into schizophrenia.
When sexual interest in girls appeared, David insisted on immediately restoring his masculine identity. He again went through hormone therapy and underwent surgery to restore the primary male sexual characteristics. Returning to his masculine appearance, David, according to his friends and parents, retained some feminine manners. In September 1990, he married Jane Fontaine and adopted her three children.
Further, David discovered that Dr. Mani continued to publish information about his case as successful. The whole story was widely publicized in 1997, when David agreed to tell this story to the whole world. As a result, David became the hero of many publications, while he did not need all this hype. Dr. Mani’s public disclosures continued, however, he himself did not respond to them.
As the documentary was shown, Brian’s mental health deteriorated. On July 1, 2002, Brian was found dead in his apartment. It is not clear whether his death was due to an accidental overdose of antidepressants or suicide.
Brian's death affected all aspects of David's life. Constant depression and nervous breakdowns forced the spouse to pause in the relationship. Then he made a very bad investment, and lost quite a lot of money. With work no luck.
The theory of Dr. Mani that you can raise a boy as a girl turned out to be wrong for most children. Nature, in terms of gender identity, cannot be rejected by education.
Dr. Mani died in 2006. He recognized that scientific experience was a failure.
The story of David Reimer became known to the general public in 2000 with the release of the book by John Kolapinto “Nature made him that way: a boy who grew up as a girl”
