18 February 1943: Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels proclaims the "Total War" before a fanatical audience in Berlin's Sportpalast. It is the regime's desperate attempt to ignore reality on the fronts and to resist the threat of defeat. A few weeks earlier, after months of fighting in Stalingrad, the sixth army had had to capitulate. In summer, the Red Army and Wehrmacht face each other at Kursk. The largest tank battle of the Second World War develops on a front arch around the Soviet city, at the end of which the Wehrmacht has to retreat. The time of the German victories is also over at the other theatres of war. In May 1943, the last Axis forces units in North Africa were captured. The way to the landing in Italy is prepared for the Allies with it.
