"We're endeavoring to be a real patriotic party of the working class here in the United States. Anti-imperialist, pro-worker, pro-growth, pro-family, anti-Israel, pro-Russia, pro-China, pro-Palestine. That's our position."
One organization present at the pro-Palestine event in DC Wednesday was the American Communist Party, which was founded just three days prior.
It stands both in its recency and ideology as an outlier in the coalition of progressive and other anti-capitalist groups that attended.
Applying member Jonathan Foster tells me the party was founded by self-proclaimed "MAGA Communist" Jackson Hinkle and others but does "absolutely not" embrace that ideology, which he calls a "meme, a slogan, a means to an end."
"We do see MAGA as an authentic movement of working people here in this country, so we hope that we can build a bridge with them as we inspire the working class to seize the means of production."
News2Share asked American Communist Party member Max Reed about his carrying an American flag, which is relatively rare at American socialist and communist events.
He says "this is the flag we should carry" and cites the example of German, Hungarian, and Polish communists using their respective national flags.
"There's nothing in contradiction with American patriotism and a revolutionary tradition with the working class of the world."
He says they hope to get communists elected to local positions like school board and mayor.
American Communist Party member Max Reed said of the response a the demonstration that "most people who are normal and aren't hyper-online, it's been mostly positive."
"The only negative response has been from the hyper-online left that hasn't done anything for the American working class and hasn't organized anything in decades."
Some leftists posting online when the ACP was founded describe it as a poison pill to inject nationalistic or MAGA-adjacent beliefs into a left-coalition.
At publication time, the American Communist Party is five days old.
