The pursuit of the latest filmmaking gear can be a never-ending task and a trap a lot of filmmakers fall in.
I’ll explain 4 things you should do instead of focusing on growing your gear closet.
The main problem I’ve seen for the last 13 years in video production and indie filmmaking is that filmmakers think gear will help them move up in the ranks or make them more money.
Ever since I stopped buying as much gear, I had a big increase in income and was able to work on a lot more projects.
I’ve also noticed that come December of every year, a lot of freelancers spend all their profits on gear, so they don’t have to pay taxes.
Some people can’t ever buy a house, because they’ve done this for decades and never showed a profit.
So should you buy any gear? How should you invest your money?
I’ll break this down into 4 points and focus on indie filmmakers and filmmakers that want to focus on making more money.
1. You should have a set of essential gear
That means one camera body with an all-around lens. Decent camera rig. Tripod.
One light kit. And one lavalier mic.
Here is my list of recommended gear for starters: (affiliate links)

Lighting

2. When you feel like your gear is out of date, buy new gear but sell your other gear while it has value.
This is very important for cameras and less important for lighting and lenses.
3. Learn marketing. No matter your goal in the world of filmmaking, from making a film that gets you to the next level or making more money, it’s all about marketing.
4. Master the gear you have. People just keep buying more gear instead of getting good and comfortable with the gear they already have.
