Ever heard of bullet comments? How about having to take a test to become a member of a social platform? Those are two of the unusual things of Bilibili, China's YouTube.
Bilibili used to be about anime and gaming culture, and now it's branching out to cover more and more types of topics. There are now "how to" videos, educational content, music and tons of entertainment.
A few interesting points:
- Bilibili's "bullet comments" fly across the screen. They can be turned on or off, but only members can post them.
- To become a real member, you need to take a test. Most of the test questions are ethical in nature, with the point of reducing the number of mindless trollish comments on the site.
- Bilibili has live content too (like almost every platform in China), and a lot of the live content is conversation or gaming.
- Women who do live conversations on Bilibili tend to wear very different makeup and use digital tools to augment their appearance too.
- Bilibili encourages it's users to download games from it too, and makes a lot of it's revenue from gaming.
- There isn't much advertising on Bilibili.
- Donald Trump is hot on Bilibili too.
