How to apply Pine Straw to Landscape Beds DIY
We know some of our customers are DIY'ers. This week we wanted to provide a few tips and tricks on installing pine straw in your landscaped beds!
Pine straw can be beneficial for a multitude of reasons:
Density- When applied correctly, a thick, dense mat of pine straw will help reduce weed pressure, increase moisture retention, and insulate plant roots from extreme temperatures.
Porous- Although dense enough to help with weeds, moisture, and temperature, it is also porous enough to allow water to penetrate well.
Lightweight- Pine straw is much lighter than other mulches, reducing compaction and allowing a much easier removal, or transfer of the straw.
Cost- Compared to other mulch options, pine straw is relatively inexpensive.
WHAT TOOLS WILL I NEED?
A leaf blower, to tuck the straw where the bed touches grass.
A shovel tuck, or flat spade, that will be used to tuck pine straw into cracks where beds are adjacent to the concrete.
Gloves because pine straw can poke you! Pine cones, sticks, and the occasional ant will almost certainly be in your bales! Long sleeves are also recommended.
HOW MUCH PINE STRAW WILL I NEED?
There are many factors when estimating how many bales you will in your specific beds. Generally, a bed with no straw currently installed will need 3-3.5 inches of straw evenly distributed. However, a bed with straw installed already will more than likely just need a "refresher" install. These installs generally require 1-1.5 inches of straw evenly distributed throughout the bed. Things like, shrubs, trees, ground cover, or hardscaping, will affect the amount of straw you need. There are many "pinestraw/mulch calculators online". Generally, you can get a more accurate estimate by dividing the area's length by its width, then multiplying by the desired thickness.
