Mapping applications like Google Maps, Google Earth or MAPS.ME are an integral part of our life.
They are used for getting driving directions, displaying real time information or exploring the world.
In this talk Markus Tremmel will show on which concepts and technologies modern mapping apps are based.
You will get a basic idea of how the new generation of 3D map applications are designed and how they can be used for advanced spatial analysis.
In the practical part Markus will demonstrate how a 3D map application based on a popular open source framework could be implemented.
Markus Tremmel studied geoinformatics in Munich and is working as an geospatial software engineer at Rohde and Schwarz in Teisnach (Bavaria, Germany). His main focus lies on the development of map and gis applications. In his freetime he is a passionate skier and into any other outdoor sport.

OpenStreetMap Standard map:
RasterTiles:
Setup of OSM Server to create own OSM raster tiles for a map client: https://switch2osm.org/serving-tiles/....
Relevant OSM map data are for free and available here: https://download.geofabrik.de/
Vector Tiles:
Server for Vector Tiles: https://github.com/maptiler/tileserve...
Create own OSM Vector Tiles: https://openmaptiles.org/docs/generat...
Various map styles and ready to use OSM Vector Tiles can be purchased: https://openmaptiles.org/
Satellite Pictures:
Free satellite pictures are provided by Landsat earth observation satellite with a resolution of 30 metres and by Sentinel satellite with a resolution of 20 metres.
Data are available fro free on Amazon: https://registry.opendata.aws/
2/2.5D Map Framework:
For visualising Vector Tiles and simple buildings I can recommend Mapbox GL JS https://docs.mapbox.com/mapbox-gl-js/...
3D Map Framework:
Introduction to build 3D Maps with the use of JS framework Cesium: https://cesium.com/docs/tutorials/get...
Examples: https://cesiumjs.org/Cesium/Build/App...
Terrain Tiles:
To create terrain tiles which can be used together with Cesium: https://github.com/geo-data/cesium-te... builder or https://github.com/heremaps/tin-terrain
Free terrain data with a resolution of 30 metres are available from SRTM Mission: https://earthexplorer.usgs.gov/
3D Tiles:
Yet there are no sufficient open-source tools available to build 3D Tiles in order to visualise buildings with Cesium
Cesium offers a service called Ion which can be used private and with a low data rate for free, a licence is needed for commercial use: https://cesium.com/cesium-ion/)
Further commercial tools are FME: https://www.safe.com/integrate/cesium... or VirtualCityPublisher by Virtual City Systems: https://www.virtualcitysystems.de/pro...
