Cargo ship crashes into Baltimore bridge
A major bridge in Baltimore collapsed after being hit by a freighter early Tuesday, sending people into the water as a large section of the bridge crashed into the Patapsco River. Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace said several people were likely on Francis Scott Key Bridge when it fell and that vehicles have been detected in the water.
Authorities opened an investigation after a Singapore-flagged vessel, the 948-foot Dali, crashed into the Key Bridge about 1:30 a.m. Eastern time. Officials said there was no indication of an intentional act in the vessel strike and bridge collapse.
Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said vessel traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore was “suspended until further notice.” The Maryland Transportation Authority closed Interstate 695 in both directions.
