On November 4th 1970, after a violent argument with her controlling husband, Irene Wiley accompanied by her daughter Genie decided to apply for disability benefits due to her extremely poor eyesight.
In an ironic twist of fate, due to Irene’s near blindness, she entered the general social services office which just happened to be located right next door to the welfare building.
When the pair entered, the social worker at the counter immediately took notice of Genie. The 4 ft 6 pale child only weighed 27kg’s (59 pounds) and could not stand straight nor fully extend any of her limbs.
At first glance, the social worker believed the girl to be six or seven years of age and possibly autistic. However, when Irene told the social worker, Genie was in fact 13-years-old her concern peaked and the police were immediately called.
Irene and Clark Wiley would find themselves arrested and the story of Genie, whom the media dubbed ‘The Feral Child’ would reach headlines and gain academic researchers' interest. But Genie's story is so much more than a subject to be studied or a headline for the media.
It’s a tragic tale of a girl denied physical and mental stimulation for over a decade at the hands of a violently disturbed father and a passive mother.
