Sarah is an actor on a birthday weekend visit to her mother. She is close to her mother, who is loving and affectionate but has a more traditional worldview than her ambitious daughter. But then Sarah gets news of a big job she just landed and needs to leave right away.
Sarah's mom doesn't take well to the news, sparking an argument between the pair that reveals Sarah's fear of becoming like her mother. The realization opens a gulf between them, one where they confront the very different lives they live and what has made them possible.
Directed and written by Jess Berry, who also plays the lead role of Sarah, this touching family drama short examines the generational gap between a stay-at-home mother and the ambitious, driven daughter she raised. Rendered in sun-warmed, gently hazy cinematography that feels both naturalistic and poetic, the film casts an atmosphere of familial love and coziness, a nest of domesticity created in large part by the dedicated efforts of Sarah's mother. Yet Sarah has different goals for herself, ones that her mother judges as not as fulfilling as the traditional life path she chose for herself. The gulf between them opens up their painful differences, which create discord in what was previously a harmonious relationship.
Essentially a two-hander between two women in a single location, the dialogue reveals much of the gulf between Sarah and her mother, clearly stating their different positions and values. These come out into the stark open when Sarah reveals she has to leave right away to take an acting job, upsetting her mother, who has been lovingly preparing a meal and a birthday cake.
In many ways, it's a difference of opinion between tradition and modernity, but it's also revealing of each woman's attitude towards the other's life paths. Sarah's mom sees Sarah's life choices as a path leading to dissatisfaction, and Sarah reacts by proclaiming she doesn't want to be trapped in the home like her mother. What's most hurtful to both are the judgments that both mother and daughter have of one another, a pain portrayed beautifully by Berry and actor Janae Berry. They capture not just the strong bond between mother and daughter, but also the deep hurt when they're not understood by the other, destabilizing what seems like a powerful love.
Sincere and affecting, DAUGHTERS might seem a straightforward snapshot of a crisis between a parent and her grown-up child, but it's made complex by the inclusion of sweetly innocent, heartwarming footage of a very young Sarah and her mother. This archival footage is interspersed with the drama, and all together, it reveals an unconditional and steadfast maternal love, consistent through all the years of Sarah's life. As Sarah grows in confidence, thanks in part to her mother's unwavering encouragement and support, both viewers and she connect the ambition and self-belief she has in her career with the way she was raised. That drive and sense of possibility are due to her mother's devotion -- one that, in the end, she comes to appreciate.
