We're back with another unboxing and initial impressions video for a new (to me) handheld! This time, it's the Anbernic RG ARC-D. This handheld is based on a Rockchip RK3566 and comes with both Linux and Android operating systems. This video shows unboxing, size comparisons with other handhelds and the Sega 6-button controller, a device weigh-in (with more that just the ARC-D), setting up the Android side with Anbernic's software, and even some gameplay.
Why am I getting an ARC-D now when it's been out for a while? There was a really good sale a few weeks back on Amazon's prime deals days for the ARC-D, and I've been wanting a replacement for my Sega Nomad that broke several years ago.
So ... is this the perfect device for Genesis games? Does it have ... for lack of a better term ... Anbernic jank? (Spoiler alert: Of course it has Anbernic jank - how could it not?). How does it look, feel, and perform? Watch on and find out.
This is an initial impressions video, and as such it's a pretty raw record of my first interactions with this handheld. It's quite long and does have some rambling and a bit of frustration as we do things like wait for retroarch cores to copy and wonder where the heck the frontend is (it's not the button, unlike my other Anbernics). Other than some short pauses to put on the screen protector and me taking a break, this is just about a livestream - it'll give you a pretty good idea how long it'll take you to get gaming if you go with the default software.
Since I'm using the Anbernic-supplied game card here (the sale units had them - and the units with a card were cheaper than buying units without a game card!), not everything is going to work either. It's a good illustration of why it's best to just make your own game card.
After I recorded this, I tossed the Anbernic game card and set up a curated card set up with my personal Sega collection and a few just-for-fun surprises. I'm going to do another (shorter and more edited!) video showing the ARC-D working more smoothly with that card.
