THE LOWDOWN:
It has recently been revealed that Google is working on an awesome dark theme for Chrome on Windows - one that doesn't require any extensions to be added to the browser. If you'd like to try it out, here's how to do it.
First, since this theme hasn't yet been added to the standard version of Chrome, you'll need to download Chrome Canary - an experimental version of the browser that adds some new, untested features. But don't worry - it doesn't replace your existing version of Chrome, it installs alongside it. So all you need to do is go to the download page, download and install it.
Next, find the properties of the shortcut that you use to open the browser. If you open the browser from its desktop shortcut, all you need to do is right click on it and click Properties. If you open it from the Start menu or the taskbar, this is a bit trickier. First, open up your search function, search for "Chrome Canary", then right click on the item that comes up - which should say "Desktop app" underneath it - and click "Open file location". In the window that opens, which contains a list of the shortcuts in your Start menu, right click on the Chrome Canary shortcut and click "Properties".
Alright, now you're in the properties dialog. See the field called "target"? That not only tells Windows where the Chrome program is located, but also allows you to add some flags to enable special features. So what you need to do is, right at the end and after that ending quote mark, type this:
--force-dark-mode.
Now when you open Chrome, the title bar and menus should be dark. It's not perfect - just look at the menu text, the contrast isn't very good - but it does work and will do until Google adds it as a standard feature.
