StandBy mode was introduced by Apple in iOS17 and comes enabled by default. You can check that it’s turned on by opening the Setting apps, scrolling down and tapping here. You have a few more options which we’ll come back to a bit later on, but to put your phone into standby mode simply lock the screen and turn your phone on its side. Your phone needs to be stationary and it needs to be charging for standby mode to activate. The best way to do this is to rest it on some kind of magsafe or Qi based charging stand. It does also need to be resting at an angle. Standby mode won’t work if the phone’s lying flat on a table or if you have rotation lock enabled. You can check the rotation lock setting by swiping down from the top right of your screen to display the control centre.

Once in Standby mode you can choose between three different screens. The first screen displays different Widgets , which you can swipe between by swiping up or down on each widget like so. Swiping left brings up the second screen which displays your photos. And again swiping up and down lets you choose between different memories and themes that Apple curates for you. The third and final screen displays just the current time, and again swiping up or down gives you the option to display the time in different formats.

You can customise each of these three screens even further by long pressing on the display. On the time screen, for example you can press this little icon to change the colour of the display, like so. Back on the photos screen, again long press to customise the memories and albums you wish to display.. Tapping on the eye icon will enable or disable the curation or album from view. And tapping on the plus button lets you add your additional photo albums. When you’re happy with your choices tap Done.

It's the same deal on the widgets screen. Long pressing on either the left or right widget will allow you to customise that particular widget stack. Just like with adding widgets to your home screen. Tapping the plus will let you add new widgets. And tapping on the minus icon removes them from the stack, like so. With Smart rotation enabled Apple will display a certain widget based on it’s suitable at a particular time of the day. So, for example in the morning, you’ll likely see the calendar widget, and if you have the reminder widget included in your stack, it will appear each time you need reminding. Enabling Widget Suggestions will add widgets from apps you use regularly that Apple thinks will be useful to you.

When you're happy with your customisations, tap Done to take you back to Standby mode.

If you’re thinking of using StandBy mode at night, then you’ll want to enable Night Mode in Settings, which gives the screen a red tint to minimise the light generated by your phone whilst you’re sleeping. For iPhone 14s and older, which do not have the always on display, your screen will turn off as per normal after a period of time. Tapping the screen or activating Siri will wake your phone back into StandBy mode . For those with an iPhone 14 Pro or newer, StandBy mode will remain on all the time unless you disable this option in Settings. If you prefer to have the screen turn off after a period of time, disable the option, and I recommend enabling this option which will wake the screen automatically when your phone detects motion. Such as when you wake up in the morning.
