By default most, if not all, browsers are programmed to redirect a link to an app, if you have the associated app installed. In most cases this is great, as the app is likely to provide the better user experience. However, there may be an instance where you don’t want to be redirected to the app and sadly there isn’t a setting that will enable or disable this feature. There is, however, a quick workaround, which is to simply long press on the link rather than tap it. This will bring up the context menu, and tapping Open will force the link to open in Safari rather than in the app. Safari will then remember your choice, so when you next open a similar link to the same app, it will continue to open in Safari rather than the app. To revert back to the original setting of redirecting links to their associated app, simply long press again and this time tap ‘open in app’.
It’s a similar experience using Safari on Mac, if you have the associated app installed, Safari will redirect to the app. The workaround here is to hold down the Command key and press on the link, which will open the link in a new tab. You can of course do the same thing by right clicking the link. Unlike on iPhone or iPad, however, Safari on Mac does not remember your choice, so you will need to continue with the Command click and opening the link in a new tab otherwise Safari will continue to redirect links to the associated app.
