For hundreds of years, the Land of Punt was one of the strongest trading partners of ancient Egypt and the destination of numerous Egyptian expeditions, from where it was possible to import incense such as myrrh and incense, as well as ebony, ivory and much more, including also valuable for Egyptians monkeys. Travelers could have reached Punt by traveling south from Egypt, assuming that Punt was on the southern coast of the Red Sea. However, its exact location is still a matter of controversy.
In the work, which became an occasion to recall Ancient Egypt, researchers tried to determine the geographical position of the Land of Punt, using baboons from ancient Egyptian tombs. By comparing the variations in the strontium isotope and oxygen isotope ratios in the bones, hair, and teeth of baboon mummies with those of their relatives in other parts of Africa.

In addition to the mystery of the location of Punta, the authors of the work also wanted to test the ability of the Egyptians for long voyages, as some researchers disputed this possibility, believing that the design of Egyptian ships was not suitable for navigating the Red Sea.

The sacred baboon or hamadryas (Papio hamadryas) has been a frequent motif in ancient Egyptian art and religion for over 3,000 years, from pre-dynastic figurines to later funerary traditions including wall paintings, reliefs, amulets and statues. Often, Hamadryl was the embodiment of Thoth or Jehuti - the ancient Egyptian god of wisdom, writing, the moon, science, magic, art and some other spheres. He was depicted with the head of an ibis or baboon. This is a rare example of the deification of nonhuman primates, which has been modeled for millennia by a seated male baboon with its forelimbs on its knees, also often crowned with a moon disc or crescent moon.
Figures of seated baboons spread even across the Levant and the Mediterranean coast during the Middle Bronze Age, but biological realism diminished with distance from Egypt, and the images were more symbolic than realistic.
