You can't miss it! T Coronae Borealis is a fascinating binary star system in the constellation of the Northern Crown, about 2,700 light years from Earth. It consists of a white dwarf and a red giant. What makes this system special is that a nova explosion occurs about every 80 years, when the white dwarf absorbs material from its companion star, causing a thermonuclear reaction. This explosion causes the star to temporarily become much brighter and visible to the naked eye. The last observed nova of T Coronae Borealis occurred in 1946, and the next event is expected to occur sometime in mid-August 2024. During the nova explosion, the system's brightness will increase from about 10.8 magnitudes to about 2.0 magnitudes, making it as bright as Polaris. After the explosion, the system becomes invisible again for decades before lighting up again.
