Melbourne's outer-east was the epicentre of a political earthquake last night. For the first time in more than 100 years – an opposition lost a seat to an incumbent government at a federal by-election. Voters in Aston punished the Liberal Party. The swing to Labor – a whopping 7% on the latest count.
Liberals were stunned – and are struggling to explain it. The strong endorsement for Anthony Albanese capped off a big week in parliament for his government – and for Australia's climate policy. Labor and the Greens struck a deal on new rules aimed at forcing down emissions. A National Reconstruction Fund will also go ahead – aimed at boosting manufacturing. And legislation was introduced to allow the Indigenous Voice referendum to proceed later this year. The result in Aston will give the Albanese Government a huge confidence boost. The Coalition has spent 10 months criticising from the sidelines - and trying to blame Labor for the cost-of-living. It hasn't worked.
