Welcome to Historical Humans Reads, where we take primary sources and bring them to your screen. I’m Colum Coleman and today we are reading from William Blake’s The Tyger. Published alongside The Lamb in 1794 as part of Blake’s Songs of Experience collection, The Tyger was a foundational work of the Romantic period, a time defined by emotions and individualism in literature. The poem itself was highly controversial at the time of its publication because of the work’s implications that a divine creator would create something that, although beautiful, is violent and flawed, much like a tiger.
Today we will be reading The Tyger by William Blake in its entirety.
