During Babur's struggles in Fergana, Sultan Ahmed Tambal, a non Chingizid Mongol who formerly served Babur's father as a Beg (warrior) had attempted to capture Andizhan in the name of Babur's younger brother Jahangir Mirza whom Tambal easily dominated politically.
After failing during the first attempt, Tambal tried a second attempt & it was here that a well known confrontation took place between the two in which Tambal struck Babur's head as depicted in the below miniature. Below is Babur's narration of the confrontation.
"We both entered the road and came face to face. Tambal had on all his armour except for the horse mail. I had none save my quiver and sword. I took aim at his mailed head with the arrow I had in my hand and shot. Just then an arrow struck me in the thigh, piercing straight through. I had an under helmet cap on my head. Tambal landed such a blow on my head that my head went numb".
Shaken by the blow, Babur managed to recover till Babur's Mughal (Mongol) uncles came to his rescue and managed to chase away Sultan Ahmed Tambal.
Sultan Ahmad Tambal, also appears as Tambol, Tanbal or Tanbol, (? - 1504) was a Mongol noble, ruler of Andijan first on behalf of Jahangir Mirza (1500-1501) and (1502) and then (1502-1504) in proper noun.
At the death of Umar Shaykh II (Umar Shaykh Mirza) and the ascent to the throne of Baber (June 1495) he began to stand out as one of the young prince's trusted men. In 1497 Baber went to conquer Samarkand where he entered the city (on an unspecified date in November (after a siege of seven months). Baysunkur Mirza, with 200 or 300 men, fled to the city of Turkestan (Yasi) and then to Kunduz with Khusraw Shah.
Baber stayed 18 months in Khudjand; he made an attempt towards Samarkand and an attempt towards Andijan, which were unsuccessful. But it seems that the government of Auzun Hasan and Ahmad Tambal was not liked by the inhabitants; the city of Marghilan, where Muhammad Dost Taghai (son of Ali Dost Taghai) had much influence, submitted to Baber and swore allegiance to him. Hasan and Tambal attacked Marghilan but then Hasan Dikcha revolted in Akhsi and called Baber's forces. This, moreover, was then supported by some men sent by Mahmud Khan and some deserters from the service of Auzun Hasan, and after a partial defeat near Marghilan, Hasan and Tambal retreated in disorder to Andijan where they had left in charge of affairs to Nasir Beg, husband of Auzun Hasan's sister. In the late spring of 1499 Baber appeared in Andijan and Auzun Hasan fled west while Ahmad Tambal retreated east to the fortress of Auzkint. Baber entered Andijan in June 1499; Auzun surrendered to Akhsi and after taking him with his people to Andijan was allowed to march to Karatigin, but Tambal resisted and collected all the malcontents with Baber and he says that the Mongols who served were addicted to the his own mother (sister of Yunas Khan) were either of the Doghlat clan of Hisor or the clients and servants of that clan. Baber demanded from the soldiers of Auzun Hasan who had passed into his service, to return some objects that they had confiscated from followers of Baber and the soldiers then refused and passed to Tambal. This one, thus reinforced, then advanced towards Andijan, until he found an army led by an officer of Baber at the river Ailaish, a day to the east of Andijan, which he defeated. Then he advanced accompanied by Jahangir Mirza and took positions 3 km east of Andijan; made some attacks but without establishing a regular siege; on three occasions he attacked the city but could not pass the suburbs and after a month he withdrew and went to Osh which was strongly defended, and then towards the north. He established a garrison at Madu (modern Mady, on the route between Osh and Kaixgar), of which he gave the command to his brother with a garrison of 250 men
Babur intended to occupy Osh and Uzgend (to the southeast and east respectively of Andijan); the two armies faced each other at Ab-i Khan quite near Osh and some skirmishes took place. Tambal made a mockery of attacking Andijan again but Baber who had taken positions where he could not be seen surprised him and defeated him at Khuban in late 1499 and Tambal left the field; the prisoners of Tambal's army were executed, but Baber, without supplies, had to retreat to Andijan, camping in the mountains of the hunting ground
