A playthrough of Nintendo's 1993 pinball game for the Game Boy, Kirby's Pinball Land.

Coming out about six months after Kirby's Adventure (   • Kirby's Adventure (NES) Playthrough  ), Kirby's Pinball Land was the third game in the Kirby series. It was Hal's second pinball game for the Game Boy, and it feels much like a spiritual successor to their first, Revenge of the Gator.

This time out, King Dedede has taken over the "Pinball Lands," and so the ever pragmatic Kirby turns himself into a pinball to pursue the villain. The game features three tables based on stages from Kirby's first two games, and once he defeats their leaders and takes their star wands, the path to Dedede will finally open. It's a thoroughly silly - or whimsical, if you prefer - premise for a pinball game, and it suits the Kirby brand perfectly.

The tables are three screens tall, with each featuring its own gimmicks, secrets, and classic Kirby enemies. If Kirby can reach the warp stars hidden at the top of a tables, he'll be whisked away to an arena where he'll fight the bosses, which include Kracko (the storm cloud with an eyeball at the center), Wispy Woods (the tree with the big nose), and the Poppy Brothers (the guys who hop around tossing bombs).

The gameplay is breezy and fun. The physics are a bit floaty but they feel good, and it's easy to direct Kirby wherever you want him. There's plenty to do on each screen, and the game is quite forgiving: 1-ups are plentiful, and even if Kirby happens to fall through the lowest set of flippers, he's given a last-ditch chance to launch himself back into play.

The graphics are great. The goofy cast of characters all give the game a homey bit of charm, and the large sprites and the relatively slow pace of play do a good job of mitigating visibility issues on the Game Boy's blurry screen. The soundtrack is filled with classic, memorable Kirby tunes, and the cheerful sound effects are in stereo which is a fun novelty if you're playing with headphones.

I got Kirby's Pinball Land as a gift shortly after it was released, and I loved it. The lack of challenge was more than made up for in how fun it was to chase after high scores, and the game's save feature made it easy to pick up and play in short bursts.

Spinoffs all too often lack the magic that make the games they're based on so good, but not Kirby's Pinball Land. This one's a keeper.
