Backups are immensely important. I have had many hard drives fail on me. And two cases where that meant severe data loss. And that hurt! Since then, I am a little paranoid about backups and in this video I am sharing with you how many hard drives I take on my travels, and how I backup my data while doing so. All I need is 4 external hard drives and everything is duplicated.

A free alternative. I would recommend getting the Carbon Copy Cloner. But if you can't spend the dollars, you can try this. It definitely gets the job done: https://github.com/rsyncOSX/RsyncOSX

In an ideal world my current travel hard drive setup would look like this:
3 x 4 TB 2.5" spinning drives: http://geni.us/external4tbusb3
1 x 2TB 1.5" SSD drive: http://geni.us/externalSSD2TB
The backup would look like this:
One 4TB Drive is mirrored via Carbon Copy Cloner to a second 4TB Drive.
The third 4TB Drive is partitioned into two 2TB partitions. Then one partition is used for the MacBooks Time Machine and the second partition is a clone of the 2TB SSD drive (done via CCC).
This means: MacBook + SSD + one 4TB drive is everything. And the other two drives (2x2TB) are used only for backups. I feel much better this way as I can take two drives in my backpack and the others can be stolen, in a fire or some other way destroyed, and I will still be fine and have all my data.
