Ford Duratec 20 HYBRID Engine Teardown
Here's a look inside Ford's Duratec 20 2.0L 4 cylinder naturally aspirated engine and how it works!
This engine came out of a 2014 Ford Fusion Hybrid. It was used as an economy engine across Ford's lineup , namely in the Ford Transit, Escape and the Ford Focus.
In hybrid application the water pump and thermostat has been replaced by an external electric water pump, the starter motor has been replaced by a vacuum pump, the variable valve timing for the exhaust has been blocked off, there is no direct injection, no alternator and no accessory drive belt because the AC compressor is driven by the hybrid battery electronically.
Ford's Duratec was derived from Mazda's MZR series of engines, as they share similarity in design. You can see a teardown video on the Mazda version in this video:
