The three paintings by Daniel Waswas comprising The essence of unity depict Papua New Guinean facial decorations, body adornments and masks. Waswas says: ‘These works will represent PNG on a broader scale whilst incorporating the contemporary values and influences that are faced in PNG at the moment. ... Tribal pride, and clan arts are part and parcel of Papua New Guinea. They are handed down from generation to generation. They are learned and earned but not easily obtained. The teachers of our art are the elders of our communities. ... Our art is our pride, our roots, our life. When we have no roots, then we have no pride in our own culture and in turn, our country. ... A country with a lot of cultures tend to bring barriers among the people, so I intend to represent the main symbols whilst considering harmony, belief, Christian values to bring cultures together. Basically to share and work together in understanding one another.’
Theme: One Culture, One People, One Nation artist statement
My work will represent the multi-cultural background of Papua New Guinea in a three panel study (works on canvas).
They explore the varieties of cultural diversity, focusing on the main identity or symbols of PNG. The essence of this form of creativity is to convey the message of belonging to a single group or a community with varieties of artforms. Unity in the next millenium in PNG is the focal point of expression.
A country with a lot of cultures tend to bring barriers among the people, so I intend to represent the main symbols whilst considering harmony, belief, Christian values to bring cultures together. Basically to share and work together in understanding one another.
Regionalism in PNG is one of the main factor of divided Papua New Guinea. I on the other hand as artist would like to respect the values of being part of a region but I believe in being a patriotic Papua New Guinean is the answer to some of the problems faced in PNG, eg social and political problems. We as people of this land can come to understand and being part of a single group makes thing work and it creates a better environment to live in. Not necessarily forgetting about the idea of being part of a region in PNG but come to a point of basic understanding and broaden the level of thinking is one solution to this problem of unity in PNG.
This work represents PNG on a broader scale whilst incorporating the contemporary values and influences that are faced in PNG at the moment. Inevitably the art and culture of this Pacific nation will come to a point of distortion as it is already showing signs of exploitation. I will be looking at the varieties of artforms mainly the common ones to brig PNG together and considering the values of Christianity and caring for being a Papua New Guinean will be the essence of my work.
The art of Papua New Guinea is known for its beauty and complexity.
Tribal pride, and clan arts are part and parcel of Papua New Guinea. They are handed down from generation to generation. They are learned and earned but not easily obtained. The teachers of our art are the elders of our communities. An individual is highly regarded and respected if he is a good artist. He is the holder of skills and knowledge that is passed down through the generations. Anyone who does not have the skills and knowledge of his community's arts is looked at by the public as a dying or dead tree without roots. As we do not value a dead tree because it can no longer produce any more fruit, so too we do not think much of a person who does not have skill or knowledge in the arts.
Our art is our pride, our roots, our life. When we have no roots, then we have no pride in our own culture and in turn, our country. [Daniel Waswas 1999]
