Different camera lenses do more than zoom, they will literally change the shape of your subjects face. A wide angle lens will cause the center of your subjects face to bulge out; it will tuck back their ears and pull back their hair. While a telephoto lens will flatten a face, it will show you more of their ears and it will add volume to their hair.

It will also pull the background seemingly closer to your subject even though they haven't moved at all!
