Kids in gangs and crimes at schools -- the Governor's Crime Commission on Thursday will work to address those top concerns for parents and state safety leaders. The commission on Thursday will hear from several criminal justice leaders as they work to address violence around students, getting updates on gangs and an update on firearms used in domestic violence incidents. New data shows reportable criminal offenses, including those involving weapons at North Carolina public schools, rose last school year. The Department of Public Instruction reports the crime rate is 60% higher than it was five years ago.
“These presentations will provide insight that helps our commissioners understand how to best allocate federal dollars and support organizations that are working to address gang violence in North Carolina," said Caroline Farmer, executive director of the Governor’s Crime Commission.
The meeting starts at 9 a.m.
