This video compares the image quality of the iPhone 12 Pro to the image quality of the ARRI Alexa SXT. The comparison focuses specifically on differences in color, depth of field and dynamic range in a controlled lighting environment. I try to keep as many factors as possible the same—focal length, frame rate, shutter speed, lighting, the distance of the subject from the camera, and color temperature of both sensors.

My comparison focuses on the fact that the sensor size, specifically the size of individual photosites on each sensor, makes the biggest difference in image quality. The larger the photosites, the higher the dynamic range and the more the digital image looks like film. The smaller the photosites, the more the image looks like video.

The iPhone 12 Pro, for the price, is a fantastic camera, but in my opinion, it’s clear that ARRI’s decades of R&D to render a digital image comparable to the dynamic range of film has definitely paid off. The Alexa looks a lot like film to me. The iPhone still looks like video in my opinion. But Apple has money. It may only be a matter of time before Apple’s image processing power (i.e., they design their own silicon) compensates for the iPhone’s smaller digital sensor.
