What Does "FLUSH" Mean In Carpentry?! (FLUSH VS. PROUD--What's The Difference? Why Does It Matter?!)
FLUSH is another one of those carpentry terms that frequently gets misused. This short video from The Honest Carpenter will explain what FLUSH means in terms of carpentry and woodworking--as well as it's opposite term, PROUD.
FLUSH means that two adjacent objects are perfectly parallel with one another along one particular face or surface.
If two adjacent pieces of lumber or wood are not flush, we'll say that the higher one is "Standing Proud." Or, we'll just say that it's PROUD.
Carpenters are obsessed with surfaces being flush because the eye can detect small differences in board orientations very easily. Also, it can mess up a construction project at any phase if things are left out of flush!
Yet, there are instances where we want surfaces to be slightly proud. Cabinet face frames are built to be proud virtually all around. This helps hide imperfections, and makes it easier to butt two cabinets together so that they look seamless.
