➤ David Herbert Lawrence was born in Eastwood in 1885. He studied at the University of Nottingham and practiced teaching, which he had to abandon in 1913 due to illness, and then devoted himself to Literature. In 1912, D. H. Lawrence flees to Germany with Frida Weekly, wife of his former language teacher. They married in 1914, when they returned to England and made a precarious living from their literary production.
He is one of the most important English writers, known mainly for having addressed in his work topics considered controversial in the early twentieth century, such as sexuality and human relationships with destructive characteristics.
Sons and Lovers, The Rainbow (1915), a work considered obscene at the time, Women in Love (1920), a book refused by English publishers and published years later in New York, and Lady Chatterley's Lover (1928), a banned text that circulated clandestinely. Besides these, he wrote other novels, numerous short stories, poems and essays, travel books and plays.
He died in 1930 at the age of 44.
➤ Sons and Lovers is considered the first modern portrayal of a phenomenon that, thanks to Freud, became easily recognized as the Oedipus Complex. Never had a son had such an absolute and unconditional love for his mother, totally identifying with her in the way he thought, and at the same time such a hatred for his father as Paul Morel, the youngest protagonist of this novel. Never except, perhaps, Lawrence himself. Coated with an autobiographical character, and endowed with a psychological depth never seen before, Sons and Lovers reproduces the disagreements, conflicts, and marital crises Lawrence's parents - a miner and a woman of great ambitions - went through, portraying a family suffering the effects of a dysfunctional marriage, and the consequent repercussions on the children's growth and development.
