Time to put on your dancing shoes – it’s Channel Tres in the house. The LA dude has had us bouncing to his G-funkified brand of dance music for a minute. Whether heading to the “Weedman” spot or riding “Topdown,” the DJ-producer-rhymer imbues unlimited swag and bold grooves to any daily activity. A consistent slate of genre-blending EPs and collaborative projects over the years have established the man born Sheldon Young as something of an artist’s artist. Tyler the Creator and Tinashe, who share Mr. Tres’ inclination for fun and flirtation, made great additions to ‘i can’t go outside,’ his 2020 EP that was a pandemic panacea. Fellow EDM free spirit KAYTRANADA has tapped into his languid sotto voce; same goes for Euro dance experimentalists Jungle and Polo & Pan. Having been a playlist staple for so long, the arrival of Tres’ debut album felt both long overdue and pre-ordained. ‘Head Rush’ is a 17-track shindig that builds on his established brand while dripping some new spirits into the punch. The guestlist includes funklord Thundercat, close pal Ty Dolla $ign, electro-funk hero Toro y Moi, and buzzy newcomer Teezo Touchdown. Not that he needs to prove his versatility, our man delivered two versions of himself for Vevo. For “Type,” he played the cocksure emcee; for “Cactus Water,” he played the bandleader. Heads were bobbing and feet were tapping both ways.
