We show you how to use a bicycle chain tool (also called a chain breaker) to change chain, replace chain or install a chain on your road bike, mountain bike, trail bike or bmx. The method demonstrated works shimano, SRAM, and most other chains. However, chain tools will vary on whether they can handle 6-8, 9, 10 or 11 speed chains. Practice on an old chain that was saved when the chain was last replaced. The chain consists of pins (rivets), rollers and plates. We look the chain construction of pins, rollers and plates so we can better understand chain tool use. There are two parts to the chain tool, one for pin removal and another to loosen a stiff link. Removing the correct pin part way will allow you to break the chain, remove broken links, and reinstall the chain if out on the road. Many chains now come with a quick link but for most 10 and 11 speed bicycles that usually requires special tools for quicklink removal and replacement (see our videos on use of a master link). Since a quicklink tool is not one we usually carry (nor part of most multi tools), a chain tool may be the only thing that gets you home if your have a broken chain, need to repair, for fix other chain problems while you cycling.
