The Great Molasses Flood occurred on January 15, 1919, in Boston, Massachusetts, when a large storage tank filled with 2.3 million gallons of molasses burst, releasing a massive wave of the sticky substance into the streets. The molasses, moving at speeds of up to 35 mph, caused widespread destruction, killing 21 people and injuring 150 others. Buildings were flattened, and the streets were engulfed in a thick, treacle-like mess, making rescue efforts difficult. The disaster highlighted poor industrial regulation at the time and led to new safety standards for construction.
