A two-column lookup is an excel function that helps you find information by entering the first few letters of your search term. You can use it on any type of spreadsheet and it's helpful for speeding up your workflow (and saving time!). Let's take a look at some examples of how to use two-column lookups!
We will be using the INDEX MATCH function to perform a two-column lookup in excel.
Let's learn the syntax of the MATCH function;
=MATCH(lookup_value, lookup_array ,match _type)
Lookup value - This can be a cell reference or text. In our two-column lookup example, we will use the first few letters of the name to look for it in an alphabetized list. Lookup array – The range that you want to match your lookup value with. Match type - this is where things get interesting! This tells Excel whether you are looking for an "exact" or a "close approximate".
Exact two-column lookups: If the two values are to be matched exactly, supply MATCH(lookup_value, lookup _array, 0)
In our two-column lookup example, we want to find the value in the "First Name" column that matches the value in the "Last Name" column. We will use MATCH(A12, A$11:A$22, 0). So, if you are looking for an exact match of two values in two columns, you would use 0 as your match type.
