This is a video explaining data collection for the Newton's Second Law Lab used at Finger Lakes Community College (www.flcc.edu).
In the lab a fixed total amount of mass of between 1500 g and 1600 g is accelerated several times. Initially 100 g of this total mass is used to accelerate the system by hanging it from a string attached to the cart. Increments of 100 g are moved from the cart to the hanger.
This keeps the total system mass constant, while varying the driving force.
Position vs. time data was gathered using the Vernier Science and Technology company's "Go! Motion" ultrasonic detector. The data sets are available for students enrolled in PHY118 and PHY151.
FLCC offers in-person and online physics classes each semester. Visit www.flcc.edu for more information on how to register for classes.
