ZoeMatrope: A System for Physical Material Design

Reality is the most realistic representation. We introduce a material display called ZoeMatrope that can reproduce a variety of materials with high resolution, high dynamic range and high light field fidelity by using real objects and human vision characteristics. ZoeMatrope achieves super-realistic material representation and animation by using composition and animation principles of a thaumatrope and a zoetrope. In addition, the proposed system realizes wide range of gamut by optimizing basis material set and controlling strobe light emission time in the order of microseconds. ZoeMatrope can also create spatially-varying materials, and even augmented materials such as a material with an alpha channel. ZoeMatrope will enhance not only material design but also creation of new media in art, entertainment, advertising and augmented reality.
