A clean uninstallation is essential to prevent issues when reinstalling MySQL or switching to a different database system. It helps eliminate leftover files, directories, and configurations that might interfere with future installations.
Step 1: Uninstall MySQL from Control Panel
Open Control Panel:
Press Windows + R, type appwiz.cpl, and press Enter.
Find MySQL:
In the list of installed programs, locate MySQL Server, MySQL Workbench, or any other MySQL-related installations.
Uninstall:
Select the MySQL entry and click Uninstall. Follow the prompts to complete the uninstallation process.
Step 2: Remove MySQL Data and Configuration Files
Even after uninstallation, some files might remain. To clean up, do the following:
Delete MySQL Installation Directory:
Navigate to the directory where MySQL was installed (commonly C:\Program Files\MySQL\ or C:\Program Files (x86)\MySQL\) and delete the MySQL folder.
Remove Data Directory:
Delete the MySQL data directory, usually located at C:\ProgramData\MySQL\ or C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 8.0\Data\.
Clean Up Configuration Files:
Delete any MySQL configuration files like my.ini or my.cnf, usually located in:
C:\ProgramData\MySQL\
Or the installation directory.
Step 3: Clean Up Environment Variables
If you added MySQL to your system's environment variables, remove it:
Open System Properties:
Press Windows + R, type sysdm.cpl, and press Enter.
Go to the Advanced tab and click Environment Variables.
Edit Path Variable:
In the System Variables section, find the variable named Path and click Edit.
Remove the MySQL path (e.g., C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 8.0\bin).
Confirm Changes:
Click OK to close all windows.
