Using a D-Link router as an Access Point (AP) is a great way to extend the coverage of your existing network. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to set it up:
Step 1: Reset the Router (Optional)
If the router has been used before, you may want to reset it to factory settings. This is optional but recommended for a clean setup.
To reset, press and hold the reset button (usually a small pinhole) for about 10 seconds.
Step 2: Connect to the Router
Plug the router into a power source.
Connect your computer to the router using an Ethernet cable (preferable) or Wi-Fi.
Step 3: Access the Router’s Web Interface
Open a web browser and type the router’s IP address into the address bar. Common IP addresses for D-Link routers include 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1.
Enter the login credentials. The default username is usually admin, and the password is either admin or left blank (if you haven’t changed it).
Step 4: Change the Router’s IP Address
Navigate to the Network Settings or LAN Setup section.
Change the router’s IP address to avoid conflicts with your primary router. For example, if your main router’s IP is 192.168.1.1, change the D-Link router’s IP to 192.168.1.2.
Save the settings. The router will reboot, and you may need to re-login using the new IP address.
Step 5: Disable DHCP
Go to the Network Settings or DHCP Server section.
Disable the DHCP server. This allows your primary router to manage IP address assignments.
Save the changes.
Step 6: Configure Wireless Settings

Set the security mode (e.g., WPA2) and password to match your existing network.
Step 7: Connect to the Main Router
Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN ports (not the WAN/Internet port) on your D-Link router to a LAN port on your main router.
Step 8: Finalize Setup
Restart your D-Link router.
Your D-Link router should now function as an Access Point, extending the wireless coverage of your network.
Step 9: Test the Connection
Connect your devices to the new Access Point and test the connection to ensure everything is working correctly.
