After 8 incredible years of using Unity to create over 120 projects, I'm absolutely heartbroken by their controversial new pricing model charging $0.20 per install. As a developer who has used Unity since 2014, Unity has shaped my career and became core to my identity as a game dev. I've made everything from small mobile games to VR experiments, and Unity made it possible.
But this new per-install pricing betrays the trust of loyal Unity developers like myself who helped put Unity on the map. It shows Unity cares more about squeezing money from indies rather than enabling creativity.
In this emotional video, I explain how the Unity pricing change signals the end of an era for me. I can no longer justify using an engine that penalizes developers for success. This price hike makes passion projects and experimentation too risky.
I reflect on all the amazing games, experiences, and memories Unity made possible over the last decade for me. But now I reluctantly must move on from Unity and switch to Unreal Engine, even though leaving unity breaks my heart.
While the Unity pricing change breaks my heart, I know I'm not alone. Thousands of other indie developers feel betrayed by Unity's greed which is fracturing their community.
