What is natural law ethics?
Natural law ethics is a moral theory commonly attributed to St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274).
According to this theory, the moral law can be discovered in human nature; it is the dictate of reason and is fundamentally expressed as “do good and avoid evil”.
Hence, an action is considered good, the theory argues, if it is appropriate to human nature/reason and if it is in accordance with one’s conscience (i.e. the threefold natural human inclinations).
