🎹 Ever feel unmusical or rigid at the piano? Take cues from the orchestra to add warmth, colour and flow to your playing.
Our challenge is impossible: make a static instrument sing. But the orchestra—a living body of many voices, each with unique textures, colors, and flow— has SO SO MUCH to teach us. 🌈✨ In this practice session, I used orchestral synergy to explore the Sibelius Violin Concerto.
‼️👉You can apply this to any music genre to get style, groove and flow!
Here’s my process:
➊ Listen to a full orchestral recording and let the flow of the conductor and players guide you. Conduct with it!!
➋ Feel the contrast between soloist and orchestra—where the melody stands out and where it merges.
➌ Play and re-listen repeatedly, finding touch that brings specific soloist and orchestral qualities to life on the piano.
➍ Experiment with control over dynamics and color until you find the unique “voice” for each passage.
🎻 Mimicking the orchestral flow brings rich voices and textures to our playing, bringing the piano to colourful life! 🌟
Try this approach in your own practice!
🎼 And please—tell or show me how it goes! 🎥🎶
