So.. in a previous video I talked about what could be going on if you have lower back pain when you're standing, walking, or laying flat. Some people have a tendency to have a big arch in her lower back. This can cause irritation in the back of the spine leading to pain when being in an upright position. One of the issues is often stiffness/tightness in the hip flexor muscles. Because of the attachment points of the hip flexor muscles from the hip to the lower back- it can cause compression of the joints and discs in the back. We often see shortness of the hip flexors in people who sit for long periods of time (driving or working), gymnasts or dancers, and older people with a diagnosis of spinal stenosis. Often when people stretch their hip flexors... they arch their back- leading only to further pain and problems. To properly stretch the front of the hip- think of your pelvis as a bucket of water. Tighten the abdominals and the bucket tips backwards... this protects the lower back from arching... then gently shift your weight forward. You can also drive the hips from side to side... feeling a GENTLE stretch in the front of the hip as you reach away from the down leg.
