Comparative Religion: What is God? - Why Our Conception of God Matters in the Modern World
What is God? For many people, God is thought of as an older, male, supreme being. Has this always been the case? Are the Tao, Brahman, and nirvana all different words for God? Why does it matter how we think about God?
In this lecture, we'll take a look at what the word "god" originally meant, why God is often viewed as a supreme being, and how the way we think of the ultimate (whether as supreme being, sacred hoop, financial success, or something else) can influence our approach to positive social change and personal growth. In particular, we'll discuss religious scholar (and former nun) Karen Armstrong's picture of God and why she believes a conception of a supreme creator can be problematic.
We'll also see why the three Abrahamic faiths all point to a "God beyond God." This lecture is from professor Galindo's college course on comparative religion.
