I came across a stunning sketch from FRANKLIN BOOTH: SILENT SYMPHONY by Flesk Publishing.

I mean, the whole book is stunning. But the horse in this vignette image struck me as such a great example of how hatching is meant to represent tone and volume in an image that I was compelled to study it. To be honest, I feel like I barely scratched the surface of it. Let me know if you'd like me to explore it further.
