Ongoing Onslaught of Arctic Ocean by Warm Salty Water from Sides (Atlantification & Pacification)

Global sea ice is presently at world record minimums. Here, I focus mainly on how the Arctic Ocean is completely shifting character, in our much warmer world.

Warm, salty water is infiltrating the Arctic from both the Atlantic Ocean side (Atlantification) and the Pacific Ocean side (Pacification). I chat about a brand new scientific peer reviewed paper on Atlantification.

New Peer-Reviewed scientific paper in journal Science Advances:
Title: Atlantification advances into the Amerasian Basin of the Arctic Ocean

Abstract
Atlantification—the northward inflow of anomalous waters and biota from the Atlantic into the polar basins—has wide-ranging climatological ramifications. We present previously unknown observational evidence that theatlantification processes are strengthening in the eastern Eurasian Basin. The primary example is the diminishingsea ice, which is related to a powerful ocean-heat/ice-albedo feedback, which accelerates sea-ice losses. Further-more, we observe that atlantification is extending far beyond the Lomonosov Ridge into the Makarov Basin ofthe Arctic Ocean where upper ocean ventilation creates a new and unique ecological environment. The easternpart of the Siberian Arctic Ocean is still strongly stratified, but the atlantification-driven shoaling of warm, salty, and nutrient-rich intermediate waters already has important ecological consequences there. Disentangling therole of atlantification in multiple and complex high-latitude changes should be a priority in future modeling andobservational efforts.

Perplexity.ai query: Why is global sea ice setting record new lows
https://www.perplexity.ai/search/why-...

Global sea ice cover hit a historic low in February 2025 due to a combination of factors related to climate change and warming temperatures:

Exceptional heat: February 2025 was the third hottest February on record, with global temperatures 1.59°C above pre-industrial levels.

Arctic warming: Temperatures near the North Pole soared up to 11°C above average, contributing to Arctic sea ice being 8% below average for February 16.

Antarctic decline: Antarctic sea ice was 26% below average in February, driving the global figure to record lows.

Warm oceans: Elevated ocean temperatures delayed freezing in some areas like the Hudson Bay and made it harder for ice to regrow.

Wind patterns: Strong winds in both polar regions broke apart existing ice, particularly affecting the more vulnerable Antarctic sea ice.

Feedback loop: As ice melts, darker ocean water absorbs more heat, accelerating the warming process and further ice loss.

Long-term trends: The Arctic has been experiencing a consistent decline in sea ice over the past decades, while Antarctica has shown more variability but recent significant losses.

These record lows in sea ice have serious implications for global climate regulation, polar ecosystems, and potentially for ocean circulation patterns.
