In this video, Tim Warner covers the difference between a parameter, an argument, and a switch. These terms may be familiar to developers or administrators, but the difference between them is subtle. Getting the definitions right can help you run your functions exactly how you want to.
First, parameters, arguments and switches are related to one another — they each enable us to modify executable code. All three concepts relate to function definitions and running executable code.
When running code, a function is the relation between inputs and outputs. If you imagine a hand-powered coffee grinder, the coffee mill is the function — it does the work, the beans are the input, and the output would be the grounds.
Despite often being used interchangeably, parameter and argument aren't really synonyms. Parameter refers to inputs included in the function definition, and arguments are inputs passed to the function at runtime. Meanwhile, a switch is an option that modifies the behavior of a piece of executable code.
When you fully grasp the difference between these terms, you'll have a better understanding of how code runs — watch to get examples of the differences.
